What Dental Crowns and Bridges Actually Do
A dental crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth, restoring its original shape, size, and strength. What to Expect at Your Same-Day Crown Appointment
Your appointment begins with a thorough evaluation of the tooth and the surrounding bite. Once our team has confirmed a crown or bridge is the right approach, we numb the area with a local anesthetic and prepare the tooth by removing any decay or damaged structure. From there, we use a handheld intraoral scanner to capture a precise 3D digital image of the prepared tooth and the adjacent teeth. This takes just a few minutes, causes no discomfort, and produces far more accurate data than traditional putty impressions.
Designing Your Crown on Screen
The digital scan feeds directly into our CAD/CAM design software, where Dr. King or Dr. Arriola shapes the restoration to match your bite and the teeth around it. You can watch the process on the monitor if you like. We factor in the height, contour, and shade of adjacent teeth so the finished crown blends naturally with your smile. Once the design looks right, we send it to the milling unit with a single click.
Milled and Ready in About 15 Minutes
The CEREC milling unit carves your restoration from a ceramic block selected to match your natural tooth shade. The milling process takes roughly 15 minutes. In some cases, we apply a glaze and run a brief heating cycle to enhance the ceramic’s strength and surface finish. Once the crown is ready, we try it in, confirm the fit and bite, make any fine adjustments, and bond it permanently. You leave with a finished, functional restoration the same day, with no temporary crown required and no second appointment to book.
Are Same-Day Crowns as Durable as Traditional Crowns?
Yes, and the materials science backs that up. CEREC crowns are milled from lithium disilicate ceramic or zirconia, the same high-grade ceramics used in conventional lab-made crowns. These materials are biocompatible, stain-resistant, and built to handle normal chewing forces over many years. With consistent care, a well-placed CEREC crown typically lasts 10 to 15 years or more, comparable to a traditionally made crown. The deciding factor is fit, and CEREC’s digital precision produces tight, accurate margins that rival or exceed what a lab technician achieves by hand.
One distinction worth understanding: metal-based crowns can be marginally stronger under extreme bite force. For most patients, that difference is not clinically significant. Who Makes a Good Candidate?
Same-day CEREC crowns and bridges work well for a wide range of situations. You may be a good fit if you have a tooth with a cavity that has run out of room for a filling, a cracked or fractured tooth that needs full coverage, a tooth that recently had a root canal and needs protection, or a gap from a missing tooth that a bridge can close.
